United Healthcare / Optum Therapist in Chicago
I’m in-network with United Healthcare and Optum, which means if you have one of these plans, therapy with me may be covered at little to no cost beyond your copay, depending on your specific plan.
What Your Optum Plan Might Cover
United Healthcare and Optum offer several different plan types, and coverage for therapy can vary depending on which one you have. Most PPO plans cover outpatient mental health services like individual therapy, but the exact details, your copay, whether you’ve met your deductible, how many sessions are covered, come down to your specific policy.
HMO plans sometimes require a referral or a specific in-network provider list, while PPO plans generally offer more flexibility in choosing a therapist. If you’re not sure which type of plan you have, it’s usually listed on your insurance card, or you can find it by logging into your Optum member portal.
What This Could Cost You
If your plan is in-network, you’ll typically pay a copay per session rather than the full rate. Some plans require you to meet a deductible first, meaning you might pay more per session early in the year, with costs dropping once that deductible is met. Once you’re past your deductible, many Optum insurance plans cover a significant portion of the session cost, sometimes bringing your out-of-pocket cost down to just a small copay.
If you’re not using insurance, or your specific plan isn’t in-network, my self-pay rate is $135 per session, with no hidden fees or add-ons.Â
How to Check Your Coverage
The most reliable way to know exactly what you’ll pay is to call the number on the back of your card and ask about outpatient mental health or behavioral health coverage. It can help to ask specifically about your copay, your deductible status, and whether individual therapy requires a referral.
If that feels like a lot to sort out on your own, I’m happy to help you figure out what to ask, or walk through what you find together before your first session.
